Jakarta City Administration is to implement a regulation cutting the regional work allowance of civil servants who are absent from work, an official said.

“There will be clear sanctions for state employees who are absent from work,” I Made Karmayoga, head of the Regional Employment Body, said in his office on Monday, as quoted by tempo.co.

The administration will cut the allowance by 5 percent for a civil servant, who is absent from work without any notification. For an employee, who is absent but notifies the administration, his allowance will be cut by 2.5 percent, Karmayoga said.

“This is a new regulation which has only been implemented in Jakarta,” Karmayoga said without giving details.

“The administration will give an oral warning to employees who skip work for five consecutive days. They will also be deprived of their allowance for three months,” he added.

This sanction is in accordance with the Government Regulation No. 53/2010 on the discipline of state employees.

“They (the workers) should be ashamed if they skip work as the administration uses the citizens’ money to pay them,” Karmayoga said.

It had been a common practice for civil servants to extend their holidays ahead or after the commemoration a certain holiday like Nyepi or the Hindu Day of Silence which fill fall on Tuesday.

On Monday, however, 98.74 percent of 74,820 civil servants in the Jakarta City Administration, were present. (ogi)
