579085Communications and Information Technology Minister Tifatul Sembiring has named four countries as sources of hackers who have attacked Indonesian government websites, a report said on Monday.
Tifatul was quoted by Indonesian news portal Tempo.co as saying that the hackers who have attacked Indonesian government sites were from China, Russia, the United States and South Korea.
He said the hackers were seeking state information with the intention of selling it later, but did not elaborate on the matter.
The minister said that while hacking is generally disruptive, the bright side is that it let the government know where the weaknesses in its websites were.
The government was continuing to prioritize providing access to the Internet across the country, Tifatul added.
âThere is still a gap between the center [of Indonesia] and the [more remote] regions,â he said, citing Maluku and Papua as areas where internet access was far from satisfactory.
He said that installing fiber optic cables, strengthening the 2.1 Ghz radio frequency and getting proper satellites into orbit will improve Indonesiaâs access to the Internet.
Tifatul said that once Internet access was available across the country, the government focus will focus on increasing data speeds, adding that average access speeds were still below two megabytes per second in Indonesia.
â[Mobile data] gadgets in Indonesia number some 250 million units,â Tifatul added.
